When I think of the name Sabrina, I’m usually not thinking of “The Teenage Witch.” While I obviously watched that just like any other 90’s kid, I also grew up obsessed with Audrey Hepburn and any character she played, and Sabrina really made a mark on me.
I mean, what a fabulous story of unrequited love and self-discovery! Sabrina is the chauffeur’s daughter who lives above the garage of an extravagantly wealthy family and finds herself hopelessly in love with one of the sons, David. After moving to Paris for two years, she returns as a new woman and finally catches the attention of David, but his brother, Linus, comes between them because he runs the family business and needs David to have an advantageous marriage to an heiress. In the end, Linus falls for her and she realizes that he was also what she had needed all along. My all-time favorite scene of the movie is when Sabrina is finally invited to one of the fancy parties at the family’s home. She had watched the parties for years, falling deeper in love with David as she watched him woo girl after girl, and finally David had invited her. She wore a breathtaking white and black floral ballgown swirling her skirt around and dancing with pure joy anxiously awaiting his arrival in the indoor tennis court.
When I saw this maxi dress, I immediately thought of that scene and had to make this dress mine. It has a lot of elements that make it different from Sabrina’s iconic number, but the black floral on the white fabric was just so spot-on. I’m movie-obsessed, and any time I find something that reminds me of one of my favorite characters, I fall in love. It sort of goes hand in hand with my love of Halloween. Dressing up is so fun for me, and even though I’m nearly 27 years old, I don’t think I’ll ever stop.
